Solmaz obtained her Bachelor of Art degree in Fashion Design from Farah University in 1977. Her course of studies included not only topics related to dress designs but also textile design and fashion harmony. Since 1990, Solmaz has been having her own fashion design and fashion consulting business, preparing custom-made bridal gowns, evening gowns, and Haute Couture style garments. Her customers have included some famous personalities in the greater Washington Metropolitan Area.
In the past 10 years, Solmaz has introduced "Felt" textile into some of her designs. Felt is a non-woven fabric made from entangled wool fibers. A few major fashion houses have started using some form of felt in their collections. Solmaz got introduced to felting while traveling in Central Asia (Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan). At that time, she was involved in painting and dress design. Learning about felting, she had a revelation that this age-old technique would complement both of those interests. She has used a variation of felting technique in which wool fibers are felted through a woven fabric so that garments made with this type of textile can be worn in warmer seasons too.
